Praying for Priests
Let us think just a few moments
about the greatness of the Holy Priesthood in the Church, about the power
of the priests to forgive sins in the name of God, about their power to
consecrate simple bread into the Body, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus
Christ, and about the tremendous responsibility of the priest with regards
to the eternal destiny of the immortal souls which are entrusted to their
care and who guide these souls by preaching to them the full truth and
admonishing them to keep on the straight way of the commandments of God.
Now the Sacrament of Holy Orders is one of only three man can receive
only once, because these imprint on the soul an indelible mark.
On account of the great effect and significant influence on man's life, the Church places helpers, even when these sacraments are received by an adult. Where, then, may I ask, is the sponsor for the priest? Is not the burden of this grace heavy enough already to merit such a support? Certainly Our Lord entrusted all His priests with Saint John to the motherly care of Our Blessed Mother merits beneath the Cross! But would she not be pleased to have today some daughter or son who helps her in this responsibility through intercession and sacrifices? I do not think that anyone would doubt this.
This is the reason, therefore, why we would like to thank you from all our heart for assuming the sponsorship of one priest, supporting him in his immense responsibility with regards to the holy things of God in an ever more secular world, supporting him with your special prayers, and with your small renunciations which you offer to the Lord for him with loving offering of any difficulty which daily life may bring. In this you are such a son or daughter of Our Lady! In this you are a sponsor for the priests.
Our Lord promises: "He who receives you receives Me, ... and whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward." (Mt. 10;40-42) May the reward of the Lord be the grace that you might always have a priest who gives you daily Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and at the end of this life eternal happiness.
